    Abstract

This is an early paper on the use of 3 dimensional modelling. Baxter's role was to introduce the ideas of complexity and to consider how 3D modelling might help in coping with complexity. So the paper briefly reviews the main features of complex environments and their essentially unpredictable nature and it considers strategies most appropriate for coping with complexity by focusing on those of an intuitive character. Baxter's experience with the practice of 'future state visioning' was embraced and extended in an exploratory model, to be used in participatory prototyping. The paper speculates on how this technique of 'collaborative visualisation' aids team development and it concludes with suggestions on how design management could use the technique as one of a portfolio of techniques for coping with complexity. The paper was a collaborative venture between members of two research groups (Strategic Design Group, David Townson & Angus Colvin and Natural Design Seaton Baxter) Evidence: Published conference proceedings containing paper
