It tracks development of UK's Designing for the 21st Century Research Initiative since March 2004 through to the end of Phase 1 projects in 2006. Inns is Director for this £6.5 million AHRC and EPSRC initiative (supported by £405,000 EPSRC/AHRC award to UoDundee). In Phase One 21 network projects were led by UK HEIs, each of which has contributed 5000 word chapter to book. These contributions describe the context of enquiry, the journey taken by research teams and key insights generated through discourse. Inns, provides an introductory chapter (pp.11 - 26) that suggests ways the reader might navigate these different viewpoints. The introductory chapter describes the generic journey take by the projects and details a changing landscape for design and new emergent roles for the designer. These insights are based on review of all 21 projects and dialogue with Phase 1 researchers during workshops organised by Inns at the Design Council 2.2.05 (www.design21.dundee.ac.uk/PDF/02febreport.pdf), the Lighthouse, Glasgow in 8-10.11.05 (www.design21.dundee.ac.uk/PDF/nov05report.pdf) and a one day symposium ‘Design Dialogues’ organised & chaired by Inns at RIBA, London on 7.3.06. Inns presented a 5000 word paper on this work at the EAD Conference in Izmir, Turkey 12.4.07. He gave a key note speech on the work to the Humanities European Research Association at ‘The Humanities as a source of Creativity & Innovation’ at RIBA, London on 15.6.07. Inns has presented the work by invitation to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagan 15.11.07. On 3.12.07 Inns has been invited by the AHRC & FCO to present this work at ‘Beyond Borders Workshop’ on ‘innovation & investment in research’ in Sao Paulo, Brazil for the UK/Brazil year of science & innovation on 3 December 2007 dc.description.sponsorship: Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) coverage.spatial: Beyond Borders Workshop, Sao Paulo, Brazil, 3rd December 2007 Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, 15th November 2007 “Humanities as a Source of Creativity and Innovation” speech, Humanities European Research Association, RIBA, London, 15th June 2007 EAD 07, Izmir, Turkey, 11th - 13th April 2007 Design Dialogues symposium, Royal Institute of British Architects, London, 7th March 2006 Reflection & Projection Workshop, The Lighthouse, Glasgow, 8th-10th November 2005 Research Clusters Workshop, Design Council, London, 2nd February 2005 dc.isbasedon: Designing for the 21st century: interdisciplinary methods and findings (2010), edited by Tom Inns EAD 07: Proceedings of the 7th International Conference of the European Academy of Design - Dancing with Disorder: Design, Discourse and Disaster, Izmir, Turkey, 11th - 13th April 2007 Designing for the 21st century: Design Dialogues proceedings book (2006), edited by Tom Inns and Vicky Hale Designing for the 21st century initiative.
