Using dialogical argument as an interface to complex debates

    Abstract

    The MAgtaLO (MultiAGenT Argumentation, Logic, and Opinion) system is a prototype environment for debate that supports naturalistic dialogue. MAgtaLO demonstrates how to handle dialogue protocols to achieve two objectives. First, MAgtaLO supports flexible intuitive interaction with data in complex debate domains to facilitate understanding and assimilation. Second, it supports structured knowledge elicitation, which enables the expansion of the those domains' resources. The arguments in this corpus are stored using the XML-based Argument Markup Language (AML) and can easily be read into data structures. One aim of MAgtaLO is to enable the participants to engage in a discussion rather than an interrogation. Although the user is normally in control of the dialogue, agents may automatically interject after a statement is made if the agent has a sufficiently strong desire to speak regarding that statement. Each agent has a threshold value which enables the strength of feeling for a given point to be determined individually.
